MODERN THEATRES - Sala Grande, Venice Film Festival, Venice Biennale
The Great Hall of Venice Cinema Palace
A restoration that respects the past and embraces the future
The historic Great Hall of Venice Cinema Palace, venue for the main screenings and award ceremonies of the annual film festival, has gone through various transformations over the years. From its first renovation in the 1950s, through an intervention in 1995, the latest transformation in 2011 marked a radical change, with a restoration that integrated the most modern visual and sound technologies.
This restyling respected the formal elements of 1937, reinterpreting them in a contemporary key: a wooden boiserie along the walls and new seats from 1019 to 1032, all made and installed by TMA Italia, recall Luigi Quagliata’s original design, with specially made fabrics. Great attention was paid to the lighting system and acoustic improvement. The trapezoidal shape of the auditorium, designed to optimise the acoustics of past systems, has been updated to adapt to modern sound systems, thus guaranteeing a state-of-the-art cinema experience.
