From unused space to auditorium Sweden Martina Auditorium : 6,000 sf coming to life For Sweden & Martina‘s 50th anniversary, a previously unused space was transformed into a magnificent example of a multi-purpose auditorium. With a focus on biosustainability and energy conservation, the venue was thoroughly redeveloped. The fine materials chosen and used by TMA for the auditorium seating with dark-toned fabrics, together with the walls of the hall, make the most of the contrast given by the light shade of the flooring. Milan Teatro La Scala
One of the symbols of Milan The city’s theatre. The La Scala Theatre underwent major restoration and modernisation work in the early 2000s. Work began in 2002 and lasted three seasons. The Milan City Council opted for Mario Botta’s architectural design and Elisabetta Fabbri’s conservative restoration project, while the design of the stage machinery and general coordination were handled by Franco Malgrande. TMA designed, manufactured, and supplied the stalls seats and was responsible for the restoration of the box seats, lacquered with gold leaf, and the balcony seats. The stalls seats were fitted with a display on the back for the simultaneous translation of the operas in 9 languages. TMA supplied the curtain, which was reproduced based on the original one that was temporarily moved to Teatro Arcimboldi, and set up all the technical and service rooms, dressing rooms, and dance rehearsal rooms. TMA also handled the restoration of the Theatre Museum’s seats and furniture. Ravenna Teatro Alighieri
A Venetian touch in Ravenna The theatre with a neoclassical design. The construction of the theatre in 1838 was entrusted to the young Venetian architects Tomaso and Giovan Battista Meduna, who had recently overseen the restoration of the Teatro alla Fenice in Venice. The foundation stone was laid in September of the same year, resulting in a building with a neoclassical design, not unlike the Venetian style. The latest restoration work, which was carried out in 2018 and 2019, focused on the technological modernisation of the orchestra pit and the improvement and upgrading of the stalls. A motorised movable platform was installed in the orchestra pit to allow three positioning heights, which correspond to the orchestra pit, the stalls, and the proscenium. The new Alighieri seats were custom made exclusively by TMA and chosen by a commission which also included architect Bruno Minardi. The Conservatoire de Mulhouse is one of the most modern music centres in France with approximately 7000 m² of floor space to accommodate more than 180 students. The new 325-seat auditorium enables young people to practise under professional conditions, different from the usual rehearsal room, and is also used to host performances by established artists. Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre
Culture at your fingertips Two theatres just a stone’s throw from the airport. Located near Muscat International Airport, the new Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) is in an area known as the “City of Gratitude”. This development is part of a government plan to revitalise the tourism sector. The OCEC contains five halls with more than 20,000 square metres of exhibition space, 33 meeting rooms and hospitality suites, a multi-storey car park, an energy centre, a 3200-seat auditorium, a 450-seat theatre, 2 ballrooms with capacities of 1200 and 540 guests, 20 additional meeting and conference rooms, and two 300-room hotels. Turin University Auditorium
From riding school to Auditorium An urban transformation. The restoration project transformed the large hall of the riding school into a prestigious, elegant Aula Magna for the University of Turin. This transformation was carried out with the aim of safeguarding and enhancing the building, the historical seat of the university. A refined shell encloses the conference hall for which TMA was responsible for all the interior and exterior acoustic wood panelling of the hall and the ceiling cladding. The seats installed in the stalls are the Aida model, upholstered in fabric with wooden armrests; they are the same model as those used for the panelist counter complete with a rostrum, with an oak finish. Florence Teatro dell’Opera
A theatre that can adapt to different requirements Perfect acoustics. The entire architectural complex was designed by Paolo Desideri and his firm Abdr. The theatre is mainly intended for concert music. The stage can accommodate up to 115 musicians and 100 choristers, but can also be easily adapted for theatrical performances. The single stalls area and the sections to the side of the stage make it possible, through the use of fast technical stage machinery, to alter the capacity of the theatre from 1100 to 500 spectators. This gives the Fondazione Maggio Fiorentino a tool that can present theatrical performances in the best possible way, thus optimising their management. In the best concert tradition, the interior panelling is made of pear wood, and special curtains are used to optimise the acoustics for each different layout and use of the theatre. Milan Teatro degli Arcimboldi
An icon of Milanese culture A venue par excellence for live performances. The Teatro degli Arcimboldi was originally intended to host the performances of the La Scala Theatre during its renovation by Piermarini. The proscenium was therefore built with dimensions similar to those of La Scala, i.e. 12 metres high and 16 metres wide. The stalls, which are spread over two levels and two central galleries, can seat 2,346 spectators and are set in a hall lined with red tinted wood panels. A series of side panels – adjustable and of varying thickness – serve as acoustic baffles and lighting screens. Milan Teatro Gerolamo
A small gem of the city A miniature La Scala. The Teatro Gerolamo is a small gem of Milanese theatres. It reopened in 2016 after being closed for more than 30 years. Built in just a few months in 1868, the theatre in Piazza Beccaria is a miniature La Scala, with two tiers of boxes, a gallery, and stalls for a total seating capacity, at the time, of 600. TMA was responsible for the restoration of the stalls seats and the production of the seats in the boxes and gallery, as well as the fitting out of the dressing rooms, café, library, cloakroom, and foyer. Perugia Teatro Morlacchi
A theatre with deep roots A theatre destined to expand over the years. On 15 September 1781, the theatre was inaugurated under the name “Teatro Civico del Verzaro”, and at the time had a capacity of 1,200 spectators. In 1874, the Accademia decided to renovate and expand the theatre. This work was entrusted to architect Guglielmo Calderini, who oversaw the shaping and restoration of the stucco decorations on the front of the boxes. For the new inauguration, the theatre was named after “Francesco Morlacchi”, a musician and philosopher from Perugia. The theatre was seriously damaged in World War II. In the years 1951-53, the municipal administration financed extensive new work: the stage was raised and enlarged; two fly galleries were built, the first as a storage room and the second as an electrical control cabinet; the dressing rooms and WC facilities were rebuilt; and the grid was rebuilt. The theatre of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino continues to grow A versatile, configurable space with exceptional acoustic properties. The new Auditorium is named after the Indian maestro Zubin Mehta, honorary conductor for life of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra. It has 1,100 seats and was designed by ABDR Architetti Associati led by architect Paolo Desideri. “Transformability” is one of the key words used to describe this venue. This is because it was designed not only to meet the requirements for opera performances and chamber concerts, but also to be used by other institutions. The architect stated that the greatest challenge was to ensure excellent acoustics for many different uses. In addition to this, there was also the enormous complexity related to the different functions of the auditorium: the stage can be transformed into an orchestra pit, the stage curtain and valance curtain can be lowered from above, the choir area can be transformed into space for the audience, and many other transformations.
